Courtesy and Indomitable Spirit by Dr. Dennis McCain Courtesy is a quality of life that is a reflection of our inner man (attitude) or spirit. When we fail to demonstrate courtesy, it is immediately apparent that we need greater maturity and control over our actions. What possible relationship could exist between the quality of courtesy and indomitable spirit? An intricate balance should exist between these fundamental principles of life: a balance of kindness and courage, of compassion and duty, and of mercy and responsibility. Although we are taught to be courteous, there is a point of confrontation which sometimes inescapable. It is at this point of no return that we demonstrate the spirit of courage without the loss of temper or control. This is no small achievement! Think through the importance of each tenet and see their inseparable link. Without courtesy there is no integrity, without integrity there is no perseverance, with perseverance there is no self-control, and without self-control there is no indomitable spirit or courtesy. Lay the foundation of courtesy and indomitable spirit will be the outcome.
